My first reaction to Tarantino movies is usually my best. His films tend to hit me on a very visceral level & evoke a reaction few filmmakers are capable of, but based on how I felt coming out of 'The Hateful Eight' I'm unsure if I wasn't as satisfied because this one was a bit too much Tarantino or that there's so much to dig into that it will reward repeat viewings more than something like 'Django Unchained.' "Hateful' is an indulgent, overlong film that still manages to be extremely entertaining, gorgeous and also contains 3 great performances. The extremely simple plot takes place shortly after the Civil War, beginning with 'The Hangman' John Ruth (a semi-famous bounty hunter played aggressively by Kurt Russell) bringing his latest capture to a nearby town to face justice. His prize is Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), an angry woman who enjoys making Ruth's task as difficult as possible, no matter how much she suffers for it - you never once doubt that she deserves what is coming to her, but she's entertaining enough that part of me was rooting for her. As a blizzard approaches, their stagecoach needs to stop at Minnie's Haberdashery (a little inn/pitstop outside town) to wait out the weather. On the way they pick up fellow bounty hunter Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and the new Sheriff of Red Rocks Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins). When they get to Minnie's there are a few more interesting characters already held up there and the tension rises immediately as everyone is protecting themselves (and their bounties).
