How to Train Your Dragon 2 opens much in the same way that the original film did – a voice-over of Hiccup explaining the current situation in his home of Berk and John Powell’s incredible theme building under it. But it then picks up and doesn’t stop improving upon the original for over 90 minutes. I am firmly in the camp that the first one was a very special film, capturing adventure and emotion like few films do, let alone ones theoretically made for children. By raising the stakes and making some extremely bold & brave choices that may anger some audiences, the sequel surpasses the original in just about every way. This is a fun thrill-ride that never lets you lose interest and isn't afraid of darker elements when they're necessary. There is not a single moment of downtime but not because of constant action – it’s because of constant investment.
