_ Well the summer movie season has officially begun with Marvel’s follow-up to The Avengers, the third film in their first and most successful (single hero) franchise. It continues the recent Marvel trend of funny films with a strong voice at the helm and focuses much more on Tony Stark as a non-iron man than any previous installment. At the beginning of the film, we flashback to a meeting between Tony and Aiden Gillian, our main villain, played by Guy Pearce. Tony doesn’t pay him much mind and blows him off after showing a sliver of interest. After that, we’re back to present day, where Tony is dealing with the aftermath of fighting off an alien invasion in New York City with other superheroes and almost dying after escorting a nuclear missile through a wormhole to space - again, how the hell did they pull that ridiculous movie off? He is having trouble sleeping, and spends all his time making new armor variations in his lab. Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) has taken over Stark Industries, the American military has an Iron Man of their own in the Iron Patriot (formerly known as War Machine) piloted by James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), and a new terrorist has been performing attacks around the globe without leaving any evidence of what caused the explosions. As we find him here, Tony is unable to separate himself from the mechanical suits that have given him a new identity, both internally and externally. He has been exposed to things he never would have believed existed and threats he may not be able to handle. This new terrorist, The Mandarin, eventually hits a little too close to home for Tony, who then challenges The Mandarin directly. This leads to the large-scale attack on Tony & Pepper’s seaside home that has been seen in all the trailers. Tony is then flown off to a rural area and left to find himself when he cannot be in the suit 24/7, leading to the real heart of the film.
